Far from the southern Alps, a distant shadow from Tongariro, mt Taranaki stands alone on the west of north islands. From its twin peaks, rivers flow into the plains below and forests flourish on its slopes. Such a striking mountain provides striking views and a more than a handful of good walks. Take the ten minute walk to Dawson Falls or do the gentle loop to Wilkes Pools. If the weather’s good and you’re up for a challenge, a trail will take you up to Fanthoms peak, 1966m above the ground.
